Connecticut House Bill 5520 Proposes Increase in Small Claims Jurisdictional Limit

A bill has been introduced in the Connecticut legislature that would increase the jurisdictional limit of small claims suits from $5,000 to $10,000.  If the bill is passed, a claim for $10,000 or under could be allowed in Connecticut Small Claims Court. We do not believe this bill will benefit consumers because the increased jurisdictional limit will make it easier for debt buyers to purchase old credit card debts that were charged-off and to collect them – sometimes with little or no evidence regarding the validity of the debt. The bill has been referred to the state judiciary committee.  You can contact members of the judiciary committee and tell them not to support House Bill 5520.
